Well-known as a popular vacation spot for Japanese mainlanders, the sub-tropical paradise of Okinawa is also a popular place to relocate for expats and mainlanders alike. Okinawa’s unique local culture--a blend of native Okinawan, Japanese, and American influences--makes it surprisingly cosmopolitan despite being such a relatively small and isolated prefecture.
Okinawa is Japan’s southernmost prefecture, consisting of over 100 islands of varying sizes that stretch over 1000km from just south of Kagoshima Prefecture to just east of Taiwan. The total population of Okinawa Prefecture is approximately 1.5 million people.
In this article, we will show you the average home, apartment, and land price in 3 of Okinawa’s most popular cities. If you are interested in purchasing real estate in Okinawa Prefecture, keep reading to find out the average property price and see some homes and land that are currently for sale.
Naha

The capital of Okinawa Prefecture, Naha is also its most populous city. It’s home to a diverse population consisting of many different nationalities, making for a fascinating melting pot of different cultures and backgrounds. Nowhere is this more apparent than along Kokusai-dori (literally “International Avenue”), the city’s central thoroughfare which features countless shops, bars, and restaurants
Northeast of Kokusai-dori is an up-and-coming area called Shintoshin (literally “New City Center”) which, appropriately, is on its way to become the new city center--it’s where most of the new development in the city is taking place, and it features several shopping malls, high-end Western brand stores, and other attractions that make it popular among young people and tourists.
Unlike most major cities in Japan, Naha doesn’t have a complex train system, instead relying on walking, cars, or the Okinawa Urban Monorail (also known locally as Yui Rail), which stretches from Naha Airport all the way to the neighboring city of Urasoe, as means of transport.

Despite sharing its name with the prefecture, Okinawa City is not actually the prefectural capital. It is, however, the second most populous city, with an estimated population of 138,431. Located in the center of the main island about 20km north of the capital of Naha, Okinawa City is home to several United States military facilities including Kadena Air Base, and as a result many signs in the city are in both English and Japanese.
