Japan is one of the world’s top destinations for traveling and has been particularly popular in the last decade. Tourism is one of Japan’s biggest industries, being one of the countries which produce the most tourism business for other countries, as well as having a booming internal tourism industry. 

Why is Japan so popular? 

The reasons for this might be a little obvious. Take a couple of seconds to think of Japan—the first images that come to mind are probably beautiful scenery of imposing old Japanese mansions, cherry blossom trees in full bloom, and breathtaking forests. 

Some people might challenge the notion that Japan offers a lot of nature and beautiful scenery, untainted by man’s hands, and indeed the cities of Japan are the very definition of a metropolis. However, these cities (like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto) are incredibly dense in population compared to the rest of the country, so the fact remains that Japan is mostly a green country with a lot of natural beauty.  

One of the country’s most popular natural destinations amongst foreigners and locals alike are Japan’s beaches.

5. Shirarahama Beach

Shirarahama is a resort town on the south-east coast of Japan, named after its famous beaches (Shirarahama means “white shore”). Its beautiful beaches of white sand have been a tourist draw for the last century. However, the massive influx of tourists and subsequent destruction of the beaches have called for extreme measures—a lot of the sand you see now was imported from Perth, Australia to restore the beach’s depleted white sand.

Along the coast, you’ll find plenty of resorts and hotel buildings that offer the best views of the wonderful beaches of Shirarahama. 

Other things to do in Shirarahama:

● Sandanbeki: A famous formation of cliffs around the coast which lead to numerous hidden caves. It is rumored that pirates used to inhabit these caves in the olden days, and some ancient remains are on exhibition here. There are also guided tours available.

● Engetsu-to: This tiny island is one of the most famous sights to see in Shirarahama. It is a small island and a natural arc.

4. Tsunoshima Island

This island has some of the most spectacular beaches in Japan and is connected to the mainland by a 5,000-foot long bridge. 

The bridge itself is a tourist attraction and a popular photo opportunity—at night, it lights up, and its luminous, serpentine form can be seen from far away. 

Tsunoshima has vibrant wildlife, ranging from all kinds of plants (such as Spider Lily flowers) to a wide variety of fish. Not only is it a popular attraction for swimmers and sunbathers, but also campers and sport fishers who come to the island to enjoy its rich biodiversity.

● See the Tsunoshima Lighthouse, one of the first western-style buildings erected in Japan following the opening of its borders, built circa 1870. 

3. Isshiki Beach

This popular summer destination is a favorite spot among Tokyoites, as its close proximity to the capital makes it possible to get there in around two hours, or even less if you plan ahead.

Isshiki Beach is less crowded compared to other much busier beaches which heat-stricken city-dwellers flee to when summer arrives, making it an ideal place to take the whole family to spend the day. You can even try your hand at some beach sports like windsurfing and volleyball without looking silly in front of so many people!

● Not everything has to be about the beach—Isshiki Beach offers many relaxing spots near the beach for you to take a break and enjoy some delicious seafood while you take in the beautiful scenery.

2. Busena Beach

Okinawa’s favorite beach. Busena Beach has some of the most crystal clear water on the whole island, and is home to the world-famous Busena Terrace, a five-star complex that offers only the best services for visitors.

After visiting the beautiful beach, you can also visit an underwater observatory that offers a magical experience of the sea, one you could only find in Okinawa.

● There are a lot of rental shops in the vicinity where you can rent a boat to take out to sea. 

1. Emerald Beach

The name itself should give you a hint as to why this beach is so famous around the world. Not to be confused with the Australian Emerald Beach, this beach is mentioned frequently by experts as one of the world’s best beaches. The deep, vibrant color of the water in Emerald Beach is almost like that of a precious gem.

Very close to this beach is the famous Churaumi Aquarium, the second largest aquarium in the world and one of Japan’s most popular destinations for tourists.
